The Castello di Sant'Eusanio Forconese is the ruin of a hilltop castle on Monte Cerro in the Italian municipality of Sant'Eusanio Forconese in the province of L'Aquila .
history
The complex was built in the 12th or 13th century as a fenced castle, which offered protection to the population in the event of danger. The fact that there was a cistern for drinking water inside suggests that, unlike other fenced castles in the area, the complex was designed to be a place of refuge for a long time.
Its location in the middle of the valley between the Castello di Ocre on one side and the Castello di San Pio delle Camere and the Castello di Barisciano on the other gave the castle a strategic role in the defense of the city of L'Aquila .

The enclosure is rectangular and consists of a connecting wall between five semicircular towers, the inner diameter of which varies between 3 meters and 5 meters, and four square towers. The walls are about a meter thick and between 5 and 7 meters high. On the west side of the enclosure, a moat protects the complex in addition to the natural form of the terrain .
The entrance consists of a pointed arched gate and behind it a tower with a square floor plan, behind which lies the church of Madonna del Castello , where the patronage is celebrated on the first Sunday in August . This church was built inside the enclosure in the 17th or 18th century, when the castle had already lost its defensive function.
