description
The lake is at an altitude of 85 meters above sea level. It is around five meters higher than the Mochrum Loch to the southeast , into which it drains. Castle Loch has a length of 1.9 kilometers with a maximum width of 880 meters, resulting in an area of 93 hectares and a circumference of six kilometers. Several streams flow into Castle Loch, feeding the lake volume of 2,405,111 m³. The catchment area of Castle Loch is 4.13 km². The relatively shallow lake has an average depth of 2.6 meters and a maximum depth of 5.5 meters.
A short stream flows off the south-east bank and flows into the Mochrum Loch after a run of around 1.5 kilometers. This drains via the Water of Malzie into the Bladnoch , which eventually flows into Wigtown Bay . Gargrie Moor stretches between the two lakes .
A cormorant colony was first described in 1663 that breed on the islets in Castle Loch between March and September. With over 250 breeding pairs, it is the largest domestic cormorant colony in the UK .
