The Castle River is a 96 km long right tributary of the Oldman River in the southwest of the Canadian province of Alberta .

River course

The Castle River has its source in the Canadian Rocky Mountains . It has its origin in a mountain lake 1770  m high, 4 km east of Font Mountain . The Castle River flows mostly north through the mountains. After 54 km the West Castle River joins the river from the left. This now leaves the mountains, gradually turns to the east and meanders through the foreland of the Rocky Mountains. Other major tributaries are the Carbondale River from the left and Beaver Mines Creek and Mill Creek from the right. The Castle River turns north-northeast for the final 11 miles before flowing into the Oldman River. The estuary is 12 km north-northwest of the small town of Pincher Creek . Since the completion of the Oldman River Dam in 1991, the Oldman River and several tributaries such as the Castle River have been dammed for several kilometers. Depending on the water level, up to 12 km of the lower reaches of the Castle River are flooded. Alberta Highway 3 (Crowsnest Highway) crosses the river about 7 km above the estuary .

Hydrology

The catchment area of the Castle River covers 1120 km². The mean discharge at the gauge 26 km above the mouth near Beaver Mines is 15.7 m³ / s. The highest mean monthly discharges occur in May and June with 54.4 and 60 m³ / s.
