Catherine Pickstock

Catherine Jane Crozier Pickstock (* 1970 in New York City ) is a British Anglican theologian . Since 2018 she has been Norris-Hulse Professor for Divinity at the University of Cambridge , where she previously held a chair in metaphysics and poetics . She is a fellow and tutor at Emmanuel College (Cambridge) .

Educational path

Catherine Jane Crozier PickStock attended Channing School , a private school for girls in Highgate ( London ). Here she received a choir scholarship that enabled her to study English literature at St Catharine's College , Cambridge . She completed this course in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts . She then turned to theology and completed a corresponding postgraduate study , also at the University of Cambridge. In this context, she wrote her dissertation entitled The Sacred Polis: Language, Death and Liturgy under the supervision of her PhD supervisor John Milbank . Pickstock received his doctorate in philosophy in 1996.

academic career

From 1995 to 1998, Pickstock was a research fellow at Emmanuel College . From 1998 to 2000, the support of the British Academy enabled her to do research as a postdoc at the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge. In 2006 she became a reader of philosophy and theology there. From 2016 to 2017 Pickstock was also a Mellon Teaching Fellow at the interdisciplinary Center for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. Pickstock received her first chair in 2017 as Professor of Metaphysics and Poetics at the University of Cambridge. On October 1, 2018, she received the renowned Norris-Hulse Professorship of Divinity at the same university.

research

Pickstock is known as one of the initiators of the Christian theological movement of the Radical Orthodoxy , which is based on the work of her mentor and doctoral supervisor John Milbank. Her research interests focus on philosophical theology, Platonic philosophy, and medieval theology. Her previous work includes the linguistic access to religious language, analogy and liturgy , the reinterpretation of premodern theology in the light of postmodern philosophy and the connection of the Platonic tradition with faith on a biblical basis, especially with regard to rituals for the invocation of divine intervention and the understanding of the Soul .
