Catocala mariana is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).
features

The wingspan of the moth is 40 to 44 millimeters. The upper side of the forewings shows various shades of brown, which are usually lightly dusted gray. The outer transverse line is black-brown and ends with a very small point in the inner edge . The upper side of the hind wing has a yellow color, a wide, black-brown outer band and a narrow, slightly curved central band of the same color, which kinks slightly at the end.
Similar species
The similar species Catocala eutychea differs from Catocala mariana by the much more jagged outer transverse line on the upper side of the forewing. There is no geographical overlap between the two species .
distribution and habitat
Catocala mariana is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula . The species primarily inhabits oak forests ( Quercus ).
Way of life
The moths are mainly found in May and June. You visit artificial light sources and baits . It is believed that the caterpillars live on the Kermes oak ( Quercus coccifera ). Further details on the way of life are currently not available.
