Marcus Macrinius Avitus Catonius Vindex (full name form Marcus Macrinius Avitus Marci filius Claudia Catonius Vindex ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD , who rose to the rank of senator and became a suffect consul . Individual stations of his career are known through an inscription, called cursus inversus , i.e. H. is displayed in descending order.

The military career of the Vindex consisted of the usual Tres militiae for a member of the equestrian order . He initially took over the management of the Cohors VI Gallorum as prefect . He then became a tribunus militum in the Legio VI Victrix , which had its main camp in Eburacum . The third stage was the command of the Ala III Thracum , which was stationed in the province of Pannonia superior . The Tres militiae was followed by a fourth military post ( Militia quarta ) as prefect of the Ala Contariorum , which was also stationed in Pannonia superior . He received military awards from Marcus Aurelius for his achievements: twice the hasta pura , twice a vexillum as well as a corona muralis and a corona vallaris .

He then took on the following functions (in this order): Procurator of the province of Dacia Malvensis , curator of Ariminum , governor ( Legatus Augusti pro praetore ) first in the province of Moesia superior and then in Moesia inferior ; in the last function he is proven by another inscription.

Vindex was registered in the Tribus Claudia . According to the inscription on his tombstone, he died at the age of 42 years and 5 months.

Remarks

  1. The inscription reads : praef (ecto) coh (ortis) VI Gall (orum) . Since the inscription is the only evidence of unity, its existence has been questioned on various occasions; so z. B. Eric Birley Vindex to the Cohors VII Gallorum , John Spaul against the Cohors V Gallorum . See the article Cohors VI Gallorum .
