Caturix

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caturix (gall. "Battle royal") was the god of war, the Helvetii and was equated with the Roman god Mars. Possibly he was the main god of the Helvetii, which is why it is assumed that the “Cigogner Temple” in the Roman city of Aventicum was dedicated to this god. An inscribed temple was in Nonfoux (around nine kilometers south of Yverdon). To date, five dedicatory inscriptions for Caturix have been found in the Helvetii area , all in the area around Avenches (Aventicum) and Yverdon (Eburodunum). A sixth inscription comes from Böckingennear Heilbronn. A Helvetic garrison was stationed here in the 2nd century. Other names of the Helvetic god of war were Cicollus (Gall. " Muscleman ") and Caisivus .

Strikingly, a people called Caturiges lived in Gaul , in the area of today's Chorges (<* Caturigumagus). Their main place was called Eburodunum ( modern Embrun ), thus the same as the Roman name of Yverdon, so that a connection is assumed.

Inscriptions from Mars Caturix and Mars Caisivus. The arrangement follows the locations from south to north:
