Caveira is a freguesia (municipality) on the Portuguese Azores island of Flores . It belongs to the Santa Cruz das Flores district and has 77 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

A number of legends circulate around the origin of the place name Caveira ( Portuguese for skull).

history

The island of Flores was settled around 1500. The Caveira community was founded much later. The first church was built here in 1767, and Caveira became an independent parish in 1823.
