Cayo Coco is an island on the Atlantic Ocean belonging to the Cuban province of Ciego de Ávila .

It is part of the island chain called Jardines del Rey ( Gardens of the King ), which extends over 600 km on the north coast of Cuba. After a temporary use as an air force base by the Soviet Union during the Cold War against the USA , the island is now used exclusively for tourism .

Well known is the island for their inclusive All- - hotels . From the opening of the hotel in 1993 to 2008, over 2 million tourists were counted. In addition to the white sandy beaches, the island also offers many coral reefs for diving. In the shallow bays of the island there are many water birds, e.g. B. to watch flamingos . Ernest Hemingway writes in his novel Islands in the Stream that the island of Cayo Coco was named after the red ibis (Spanish: cocos ), which occur in large numbers in the lagoons on the shore.

Cayo Coco is connected to the rest of Cuba by an approx. 17 km long stone dam, which was built for military purposes in the late 1980s. Access to the island is monitored by a control station on the land side of the dam. Only tourists and employees of the hotels get to the island. Passport and visa are required to access the island (backup copies of the passport are not accepted).

Cayo Coco has its own international airport . The neighboring islands of Cayo Coco are Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Paredón Grande .

On September 9, 2017, Cayo Coco was devastated by Hurricane Irma .
