Cecil Harcourt Smith

Cecil Harcourt Smith (born September 11, 1859 in Staines , Middlesex , † March 27, 1944 in Stoatley , Bramley , Surrey ) was an English classical archaeologist and director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London .

The son of a lawyer was educated at Winchester College and worked in the Greek and Roman Antiquities Department of the British Museum from 1879 . From 1895 to 1897, the museum assigned him to Athens , where he reorganized the British School at Athens as director . In 1904 Smith became the Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum, and from 1909 until his retirement in 1924 he was director of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
