Cell was an alternative rock / grunge band formed in New York in the early 1990s .

Band history

Cell was founded in 1990 in New York City by the two singers and guitarists Ian James (ex- Flower ) and Jerry DiRienzo, the drummer Keith Nealy (formerly guitar technician for Sonic Youth ) and bassist David Motamed (ex- Das Damen ).

Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth took on the band and released their first single Never Too High on Ecstatic Peace . The band managed to sign a record deal for seven albums with Geffen Records . They received an advance of $ 1.5 million. Her debut album Slo * Bo was released on Geffen in 1992 .

In 1994 the successor The Inner Room , which was produced by John Agnello , appeared. The second album, however, flopped.

The band fell apart again in 1995. DiRienzo then continued with Ugly Beauty .

Music genre

The history of the band fell into the 1990s, the two albums were released at the time of the grunge boom, so that they were often assigned to this genre. Musically, however, it is also about postpunk and alternative rock in the style of Sonic Youth .
