The cement factory Hartmann (formerly Cementfabrik Neuner ) was built around 1860 on the Austrian side of the Weißbach in the Bayerisch Gmainer district Leopoldsthal by Edmund Neuner and an unknown partner.

Around 1890 August Hartmann decided to participate in the factory and finally bought it. In 1896 the cement factory on the Bavarian side was expanded and equipped for the production of Portland cement .

Curiously, the site (which was converted into a “housing estate” after it was closed) is now, as it was then, not accessible via the Austrian side. Coming from Piding over a small bridge, which today functions as a side road / cycle path, you can easily cross the state border (the Weißbach) and suddenly find yourself on the Austrian side. The question of why the not-so-small facility was built at this point is still unclear - the next train station for onward transport is only several kilometers downstream in Piding or upstream in Bayerisch Gmain . The availability of raw materials such as gypsum is also likely to play a minor role - gypsum deposits can be found in many places within a radius of around 50 kilometers. A connection of the railway between Piding and Berchtesgaden through the Leopoldstal was discussed, but only after the factory was built.

The circumstances of the poor transport connections and the expensive production finally led to the closure on December 31, 1909. August Hartmann finally died in 1921.
