Susanne Melior

Susanne Melior (born September 1, 1958 in Havelberg , Magdeburg district , GDR ) is a German politician ( SPD ). She was a member of the Brandenburg state parliament from 2004 and a member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2019 .

Life and work

Susanne Melior is married and has three children. She completed a degree in microbiology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald , which she graduated with a diploma. From 1984 to 1986 she worked in the Bad Frankenhausen district hospital . Between 1986 and 1994 she took parental leave. From 1994 to 1999 Susanne Melior worked as a research assistant for SPD members in the Brandenburg state parliament. She then worked for the state capital of Potsdam as the equal opportunities officer for four years .

In 1989 Susanne Melior was one of the co-founders of the SPD in Brandenburg . For ten years she was chairwoman of the SPD local association in Michendorf . From 1992 to 2002 she was a member of the SPD state board of Brandenburg, from 1994 to 2000 state chairman of the working group of social democratic women , from 2002 to May 2010 chairwoman of the SPD subdistrict Potsdam-Mittelmark , from 1998 to 2014 member of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district council , including the group chairman for the last five years.

In January 2004, Melior moved into the Brandenburg state parliament for the first time as a successor for Christel Dettmann . In the state elections on 2004 and 2009 , she ran in the state constituency Potsdam-Mittelmark III / Potsdam III and entered the state parliament via the state list. From 2009 she was deputy chairwoman of the SPD parliamentary group. From 2004 to 2009 her focus was on financial policy, from 2009 to 2014 on science and research policy. She was also the spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group on religious policy. She was a full member of the Committee for Science, Research and Culture, as well as a deputy member of the Committee for Education, Youth and Sport and the Committee for Environment, Health and Consumer Protection. In addition, she was the chairwoman of the Enquête Commission for “coming to terms with the history and dealing with the consequences of the SED dictatorship and the transition to a democratic constitutional state in the state of Brandenburg”. Susanne Melior was a member of the Presidium of the Brandenburg State Parliament. In 2014 she left the state parliament.

In 2014 Susanne Melior was elected to the European Parliament for the SPD. She was a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats in the European Parliament . She worked on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee (ENVI) and was an alternate member of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee (AGRI). She was also a member of the delegation for the EU-Albania Parliamentary Stabilization and Association Committee.
