features

Centaurea spinosa is a dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 20 to 60 cm. The spherical bush is richly branched and has thorny branches. The leaves are felty and sometimes bare. Leaves at the base of this year's shoots are lanceolate to spatulate or lyre-shaped and with entire margins or notched. The middle leaves are pinnate or two-pinnate and have a few distant linear sections, the upper ones are linear. The cover measures 8 to 12 × 2.5 to 4 millimeters. The flowers are light pink or white. The pappus is missing.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

Occurrence

Centaurea spinosa occurs in the Aegean Sea on Greek and Turkish islands, also in Greece, in Crete and in European and Asian Turkey. In Crete, the species grows on the north coast in coastal phrygana on sandy coasts, and is less common further inland. The Cretan population has declined sharply due to tourist developments and is threatened.
