Centipede Lake Way uranium deposit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Centipede Lake Way uranium deposit is located in Lake Way , a 46,000 acre salt lake , in central Western Australia , approximately 15 km south of Wiluna .

The name of the lake and the project name Centipede-Lake Way project come from a nearby cattle breeding station, Lake Way Station .

The Leinster-Wiluna Road , which is part of the Goldfields Highway , runs along the mostly dry lake .

There is a uranium mining project on this lake operated by Toro Energy, which is scheduled to begin uranium production in 2013. It is intended to open a second uranium mine there after the Lake Maitland project in Western Australia, which will begin mining in 2012. A third uranium project is the yeelirrie uranium project of BHP Billiton , which will begin from 2014 with the dismantling. The three uranium deposits in Western Australia are within 100 km of Wiluna.

The lake is part of the open pit of the Wiluna Gold Mine , which is located in the dry lake and is accessible through a dam that was built from 2005 to 2007, but the mine only contained about 1.75 g / t. According to the high expectations, which were based on 25 g / t, the operation was considered a failure because the expectations were not met. A serious accident also occurred in the opencast mine in July 2005.

Agincourt Resources , the owner of the mine at the time, outsourced the prospecting to the newly formed Nova Energy in April 2005. After the takeover of Agincourt by Oxiana Limited , Nova Energy became a subsidiary of Toro Energy in August 2007.

Uranium mining project

Mining in the Wiluna-Leinster area

The six-year uranium mining ban imposed by the Australian Labor Party in Western Australia was lifted in 2008 when the Liberal Party of Australia won the Western Australia election . Two mining projects are a uranium production of 750 tonnes U 3 O 8 in the years 2012-2013 on Lake Maitland and with the reduction of U 3 O 8 at Lake Way of Toro Energy begin.

These uranium projects in Western Australia sparked protests from the anti-nuclear movement in Australia such as the Anti-Nuclear Alliance of Western Australia calling for the projects to be stopped.

Lake Way uranium mining is not a new project, but dates back to 1978 by Wyoming Mineral Corporation and Delhi International Oil . In 1982 the Australian government allowed Delhi International to develop the uranium mine, but the project was abandoned the following year. The mining was to take place in the form of small open-cast mines spread over an area of nine square kilometers.

Current mining activity on Lake Way involves two deposits, the Lake Way deposit on the northern end of the lake and the Centipede deposit on the southwestern side of the lake. Toro plans to mine uranium in the form of a solution mine with a production of 700 tons to exhaustion after 10 years.

In February 2010, Toro received news from the Australian Environment Minister of Western Australia, Donna Faragher , that the government had withdrawn the opposition she had raised over environmental concerns against uranium mining in the Wiluna project. The government has now allowed a review of the deposit in the form of a test mining on Lake Way , which also means that the mining permit by the holder of the native title is connected with it. After this was done in May 2010, test mining began for eight weeks.

Western Australia Member of Parliament Robin Chapple complained that the radioactive uranium oxide was unprotected and uncovered on the Lake Way in 2010 , even though a request had been made in 2000. The Department of Mines and Petroleum stated that this material had behaved like the existing local natural rock after investigations .
