Wiluna is a city in the mid-west region of Western Australia . It is 947 kilometers from Perth and 182 kilometers from Meekatharra . The city is located in an area with large ore deposits , the Norseman- Wiluna greenstone belt , including gold and uranium . The access to Wiluna is via dirt roads, the Canning Stock Route and the Gunbarrel Highway .

The place is important for the local Aborigines , the local dairy industry and the mines. The miners who work in the vicinity of Wiluna are flown in by airplanes for 14-day shift work.

Surname

The name of the place was derived from Weeloona , which means windy place in the Aboriginal language .

history

Gold was discovered in the Wiluna area in 1896, and within a few months more than 300 prospectors came there. Wiluna was named town in 1898. In the 1930s it had over 9,000 inhabitants. however, when the Second World War began, numerous mines were closed. Around 1963 the population fell below 100. The mining of gold was resumed after 1981.

Wiluna is on the edge of the Western Desert . Numerous Aborigines live there in their traditional land. Their number in Wiluna fluctuates according to the season because some of them live nomadically . As a result of British colonization, an Aboriginal mission station was established in Wiluna in the 1950s with the help of the government through the church, as a nuclear test site was established in Maralinga and the local Aboriginal tribes were expelled from this area.

In October 1960, the Millbillillie meteorite fell eleven kilometers from Wiluna.

There is a pub , a shop, a caravan park, a sports complex, a school and a clinic in the village . The Wiluna gold mine is located about three kilometers south of Wiluna .

In the Wiluna area, the Lake Maitland uranium deposit is located within a radius of 100 kilometers and is scheduled to start production in 2012, uranium mining is expected to begin in 2014 in the Centipede Lake Way uranium deposit and in the Yeelirrie uranium deposit of BHP Billiton in August 2014.
