Norseman is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia .

location

The nearest larger towns are the gold rush town of Kalgoorlie (196 km north) and the port city of Esperance (203 km south, on the Antarctic Ocean), the capital of the state, Perth , is 724 km away.

history

The Australian gold rush led to the founding of Norseman . After the first gold finds in 1892, Dundas Field was proclaimed in August 1893 , which started the first settlements in the region. In July 1894 Lawrence Sinclair discovered a rich gold deposit on his horse Norseman , which he named after the horse. In January 1895, the mine overseer asked the government for the right to found a town for up to 200 miners - the town was founded during the year. The name originally used by the Aborigines for the region was Jimberlana .

Since the city of Dundas was nearby, Norseman initially grew slowly. Ultimately, however, by 1901 a post office, a bank, a doctor and various shops could be located, as well as a courthouse and several (!) Churches. From 1899, Norseman was supplied with mail by the Cobb & Co company .

In 1935, the Western Mining Corporation settled in the city and invested heavily in infrastructure - including paved roads, an electricity supply, and a water supply through the extension of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme .

In the vicinity of the city was one of the largest gold deposits in Western Australia - from 1892 to the end of the 20th century, over 100 tons of gold were mined.
