The highway begins in Kambalda West as a continuation of the Widgiemootha Road (R94), which in turn branches off southwest of Kambalda to the northeast from the Coolgardie-Esperance Highway (N94). After 60 km the twin towns of Kalgoorlie-Boulder are reached. There the Great Eastern Highway (R94) flows from the west, while the Goldfields Highway leads as ALT 94 to the north via Menzies to Leonora . There the Laverton Leonora Road branches off to the east , which becomes the Great Central Road from Laverton .

The highway continues north via Leinster to Wiluna . There a road branches off to the east, which becomes the Gunbarrel Highway from Old Carnegie . The longest and toughest outback track in Australia, the Canning Stock Route , continues north, while the Goldfields Highway - now unpaved - runs a further 184 km to the west and ends on the Great Northern Highway in Meekatharra.
