The Gotthard Damage Service is a professional fire service of the Swiss Army in Airolo in the Swiss canton of Ticino . There the damage defense is called Centro d'intervento del San Gottardo .

The professional fire brigade is subordinate to the logistics center of the Swiss Army in Monteceneri . It is responsible for the safety of the Gotthard road tunnel and its access roads, a total of 77 kilometers. The fire brigade works on behalf of the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). The Gotthard Damage Service is responsible for fire fighting, the oil service , road rescue, breakdown service, special permits and the thermal portals. In addition, the members of the professional fire brigade carry out various tasks in the extensive properties of the Swiss Army in the area of the southern portal of the Gotthard Pass and are responsible for fighting fires on the military properties.

Another unit in the canton of Uri consists of employees from the workshops in the canton of Uri. In the event of an accident, both units drive to the deployment site from both portal ends. To ensure that the deployment time of 2 minutes is not exceeded, the professional fire brigade also takes on the on- call duty with 5 relatives at the tunnel works yard in Göschenen . It also works on the south portal with an on-call service of 5 military personnel, but can be increased with employees from the factory yards within a few minutes. The Gotthard Damage Service today consists of around one hundred well-trained fire fighters, of which the Armed Forces professional fire service provides twenty-five men as the first march out. She also receives personal support from the army fire brigade in Andermatt .

The professional fire brigade manned the thermal portals on both sides of the Gotthard tunnel between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. With a thermal portal, overheated brakes on trucks can be detected and the vehicles pulled out of operation.

The professional fire brigade was founded in the summer of 2007 after it became clear that the previous staffing with members of the factory yards did not meet the requirements. The safety of the tunnel had to be improved, especially after the severe fire in 2001 with 11 deaths. For this reason, a contract was signed in 2007 with the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport, which the army in Airolo and Göschenen takes on standby duty. In the years between 2007 and 2017, the center carried out 1,069 missions, of which 289 fire missions and 238 traffic accidents. In addition, there were 2,683 breakdown missions in the tunnel, for which the center has its own tow truck. The firefighters of the two brigades speak different mother tongues, which is why the instructions are given in German and Italian.
