Cephalotaxus lanceolata is a species fromthe head family (Cephalotaxaceae). It is native to southern China and possibly northern Myanmar as well. The species is very similar to Fortune's head yew ( Cephalotaxus fortunei ), but is viewed by most authors as an independent species.

description

Cephalotaxus lanceolata grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 20 meters and a diameter of around 0.4 meters at chest height . The purple trunk bark is smooth. The hanging branches are V-shaped in cross-section and have a truncated tip.

The thin or leathery, straight or slightly crescent-shaped needles have a length of 4.5 to 10 centimeters and a width of 4 to 7 millimeters in a linear-lanceolate shape. They stand on a very short stem and come off the branches at an angle of around 45 °. The base of the needles is rounded while the tip is long, pointed. The needle edges are bent back. The top of the needle is dark green in color and there are rows of white stomatals on the underside of the needle .

The appearance of the male cones is unknown. The female cones have a 1.5 to 2 centimeter long stem. They are surrounded by a seed coat ( arillus ). This changes color to greenish-brown when ripe in September to November. The obovate-elliptical seeds are 3.5 to 4.5 centimeters long.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Cephalotaxus lanceolata includes the northwest of the Chinese province of Yunnan and possibly also northern Myanmar . In Yunnan, the species is found in Gongshan Drungzu Nuzu Zizhixian on the upper reaches of the Dulongjiang .

Cephalotaxus lanceolata thrives at altitudes of 1450 to 1970 meters. The species grows scattered in evergreen deciduous forests.

Cephalotaxus lanceolata is classified as "critically endangered" in the IUCN Red List . The destruction of forests to make them usable for arable farming is named as the main risk. In the past, logging played an important role. The population of the species in China is estimated at 6,754 trees, most of which are young trees. The population of old trees is estimated to be less than 2,500. The Chinese government has imposed a felling ban to protect the species.

use

The wood of the species was mainly used earlier .

Systematics

It was first described as Cephalotaxus lanceolata in 1975 by Kuo Mei Feng in Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica , Volume 13 (4), page 86. The species is morphologically very similar to Fortune's head yew ( Cephalotaxus fortunei ), but is viewed by most authors as an independent species. A synonym for Cephalotaxus lanceolata K.M. Feng is Cephalotaxus fortunei var. Lanceolata (KM Feng) Silba .
