The Cerastidae (syn. Pachnodidae ) are a family of land-living snails from the suborder of the land snails (Stylommatophora). It currently comprises around 130 species living in the tropics and subtropics.
features
The casings are right-hand wound and conical, the cone is of medium height, more rarely the casings are upwardly conical. The size ranges from about 1 cm to just over 5 cm. The cases are usually white to light brown in color and have up to five darker bands or a zigzag pattern. The mouth is mostly toothless, only in the genus Passamaella there is a columellar tooth and a tooth-like depression in the palate area of the housing (palatal area). The mouth edge is often simple, seldom turned over, but mostly not thickened. The shell can be thin or thick. The surface is often smooth or only slightly ornamented with strips of growth, more rarely also strong ribs. In the male part of the genital apparatus, the flagellum is missing , as is a blind sack on the epihallus (caecum). The penis usually has a short, conical or worm-shaped process. The vagina is more or less swollen and usually lined with a spongy tissue. The sperm library is short and mostly sessile. If there is a stalk, it is without a diverticulum .
Geographical distribution, occurrence and way of life
The species in the family live in the tropical and subtropical regions of sub-Saharan Africa, southern Arabia, Socotra, the Seychelles, Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, northern Australia, and New Guinea. The original occurrence on St. Helena is uncertain.
Systematics
Schileyko (1998) and other authors used the name Pachnodidae for this family, since the type genus Cerastidae, Cerastus Martens in Albers, was allegedly preoccupied in 1860 by Cerastus Dejean in 1821. However, this name is a nomen nudum and nomenclature is not available. With that, however, Cerastus Martens in Albers, 1860 and the surname Cerastidae based on it is the valid name for this taxon . The family currently includes the following genera:
- Family Cerastidae Wenz, 1923
- Genus Achatinelloides Nevill, 1878
- Genus Altenaia Zilch, 1972
- Genus Amimopina Solem, 1964
