Cereus mortensenii is a species of plant in the genus Cereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Cereus mortensenii grows tree-shaped, is richly branched and reaches heights of growth of up to 8 meters. Often a clear trunk is formed. The cylindrical, initially bluish shoots later turn blue-green. They have a diameter of up to 8 centimeters. There are nine sharp ribs . The areoles on them are mostly covered with wool, and hairs are formed near the shoot tips . The one or two strong central spines are yellowish to gray and reach a length of 3 to 4 centimeters. The five to seven thin, pointed radial spines are brownish to gray and 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. In the upper part of the shoot a clearly pronounced pseudocephalium is formed.
The creamy white flowers are up to 6 centimeters long and up to 3.5 centimeters in diameter. A persistent remnant of flowers adheres to the depressed spherical fruits .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Cereus mortensenii is common in the Venezuelan state of Lara . The first description as Pilocereus mortensenii was published in 1960 by Léon Camille Marius Croizat . David Richard Hunt and Nigel Paul Taylor placed them in the genus Cereus in 1991 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. listed as low risk.
