The Certosa San Lorenzo di Galluzzo (also Certosa di Firenze ) is a former Carthusian monastery .
location
The Charterhouse is located on Monte Acuto , about five kilometers south of the inner city zone of Florence , in the Galluzzo district , near the confluence of the Ema and Greve rivers .
history
Niccolò Acciaiuoli , Grand Seneschal of the Kingdom of Naples , formulated in his will of 1338 the desire to found a Carthusian monastery. The deed of donation for the monastery on the road from Florence to Siena dates from 1342.
In addition to the area for the Carthusian community, a palace for the Acciaiuoli family and a student hostel (hospitium) for 50 residents should be built on the monastery area; the contemplative hermits opposed both plans.
From 1866 to 1958, after a long break, a Carthusian community lived there again; thereafter the monastery passed to the Cistercian order . Unlike the Carthusians, this order allows outsiders to visit the complex.
Art treasures
The Palace of the Acciaiuoli now serves as an art gallery and houses the frescoes with Passion scenes removed from the Great Cloister, which Pontormo painted in 1523, as well as the copies that Jacopo Chimenti made at the end of the 16th century.
In the monastery church (14th century) the monk's choir (16th century) is remarkable, because the separate seats reflect the hermit ideal of the Carthusian monks.
The Carthusian apartments are grouped around the Great Cloister (living room, study, bedroom and garden). In the spandrels there are busts from the workshop of Giovanni della Robbia (around 1523) depicting biblical people.
Others
Since 2002 the monastery has built up an almost complete database of all Cistercian monasteries worldwide. However, the entries on individual monasteries are often sparse and the content is only available in Italian.
