Percy Cerutty
Percy Wells Cerutty (* 10. January 1895 in Melbourne ; † 15. August 1975 ) was an Australian Athletics - Coach , mainly assisted middle and long distance runners.
As an opponent of interval training, he advocated long running units at a moderate pace. He coined the phrase “They do not run with their legs, but on their legs” and emphasized the importance of the arms, which should form a harmonious unit of movement with the legs to ensure optimal power delivery. His methods seemed quite unorthodox: he let his charges run barefoot in the sand of the dunes, mountaineering and even chop wood, but he was ahead of his time. By setting the priorities in individual training periods, he practiced block training , with the uphill runs on the highest dunes, his runners learned where and how they could hit the body's center of gravity when they were completely over-acidic (= optimal running economy). He called athletes who trained according to his running philosophy stotans , a mixture, and stoics and Spartans . The success proved him right: he produced the world record runners John Landy and Herb Elliott , among others .
