The Cesar E. Chavez is an American national monument in Keene in Kern County , California . It was designated by President Barack Obama by a Presidential Proclamation on October 8, 2012 with an area of ​​116 acres (47 hectares ). The National Monument was designated in honor of César Chávez (1927-1993). The site was the headquarters of the United Farm Workers (UFW) union and the home of César Chávez from the 1970s until his death in 1993. The grave of Chávez and his wife Helen Fabela Chávez is in the garden of the complex. The home was also designated a National Historic Landmark on October 8, 2012 . The National Park Service and the National Chavez Center jointly oversee the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument .
