The underside, which is much more impressive than the top, also has a white band on the wing tip. At the edge of the wing there is a white serpentine line with a black border and there are many white and black points or lines to be seen. The hind wings have the same basic color as the forewings and are toothed on the edge. On the top, near the black edge with a white serpentine line, several black dots run. As with the forewings, there is a white serpentine line with a black border on the underside. In the middle a rather thin white band with black spots on the edge runs over into the forewing. Otherwise there are many more black and white dots and smaller lines. The males are generally much more colorful than the females. The body of the butterfly is black and brown and the wingspan is 60 to 70 millimeters.

The caterpillars are initially striped red and white, later they turn dark brown and develop a thorny skin surface.

distribution

Cethosia cyane is common in the Indo-Australian region. The distribution area extends from India , through southern China to Thailand and Australia .

Way of life

The very robust animals survive as moths for several weeks. Two weeks after the end of the metamorphosis , the moths mate, the male literally falling over the female, after the animals have wrestled a little they sit on the ground and stay there for two hours. A few days later the eggs are laid on a forage plant. The caterpillars prefer moisture and warmth, but under direct sunlight the caterpillars die instantly. It feeds on blue passion flower ( Passiflora caerulea ), wonder tree ( Ricinus communis ), Adenia chevalieri , Passiflora foetida and Commelina benghalensis The species is neither endangered nor protected.

Systematics

Only one subspecies is currently known, namely Cethosia cyane euanthes ( Fruhstorfer , 1912).
