Publication history

Marie-Thérèse Fischer , a doctor of theology and historian, wrote the scenarios for all twelve volumes. The texts were implemented in drawings by Robert Bressy , Marcel Uderzo , Francis Keller , Christophe Carmona and Didier Pagot and colored by Bénédicte Quinet, Géraldine Gilles and Jean-Paul Chhun ( Sambo ).

The first two volumes were officially published on October 23, 2009, and were presented on November 21 and 22 at the Salon du Livre de Colmar 2009 by Marie-Thérèse Fischer and Francis Keller. The twelfth and final volume is due to appear in 2014.

A German language version is not available.

Genre and presentation

Cette histoire qui a fait l'Alsace is a twelve-volume historical depiction of the history of Alsace in illustrated form. The individual volumes encompass time periods that delimit certain historical events.

The series uses the classic elements of the comic: a maximum of six to eight framed panels per page (but also full-page panels or cards); Speech and thought bubbles as well as rectangles with explanatory text integrated into panels. The colored drawings are realistic and true to detail, especially when it comes to buildings, clothing and (art) objects. The perspectives vary, occasionally also a bird's eye or frog's eye view .

Most volumes have 44 pages, with 40 pages telling the story. This is followed by 4 pages with summaries:

  • Une histoire ancrée dans le terroir ” consists of a full-page map showing the location of the places mentioned in the volume;
  • Pas à pas dans le temps ” provides a chronological overview of the entire volume in pictures and numbers;
  • " Un petit plus ... ", the last two pages, provide further explanations of the text (with a page number), for example in which museum a helmet or a piece of jewelry shown in the volume, or where an organ can be seen, or exactly which buildings from which locations are shown. There are also further references to historical facts that were not mentioned in the picture story, as well as suggestions for excursions for those interested in history.

Volume 9 also contains a 4-page dedication to Francis Keller, who died on July 29, 2011 at the age of 50 while working on drawings for this volume; his final panels are shown as black and white pencil sketches.
