Cezary Franciszek Gmyz (born May 24, 1967 in Wrocław ) is a Polish journalist who belongs to the national conservative camp around the Law and Justice Party (PiS) of Jarosław Kaczyński . In 2016 he was posted to Berlin as a correspondent for the public broadcaster Telewizja Polska .

career path

After graduating from the Stefan Żeromski Lyceum in Wrocław, the son of a miner completed a degree in theater studies at the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theater Academy in Warsaw (today's Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theater Academy in Warsaw ). During his studies he held the post of vice-chairman of the Independent Student Union (NZS) at this university.

He has been a journalist since 1990. He worked for Warsaw daily newspapers and the ecumenical editorial team of TVP. In 2003 he received a scholarship from the Robert Bosch Foundation in Berlin. In 2004 he founded the “Stiftung Medientandem”, which organized information trips for German journalists in Poland. According to him, the foundation initially received funds from the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation . No activities of the foundation have been listed since 2009.

From 2003 to 2007 he was part of the editorial team of the weekly magazine Wprost , where in 2006 he headed the domestic political editorial department, then the history department. From June 2007 to November 2012 he worked as an investigative journalist for the daily Rzeczpospolita . He published an article in this newspaper on October 30, 2012 with the controversial claim that the plane crash near Smolensk on April 10, 2010 was caused by a trinitrotoluene bomb attack. Thanks to the article, Gmyz became known nationwide, but was dismissed together with the responsible editor-in-chief Tomasz Wróblewski and two other editors “for violating journalistic due diligence”. The version of the bombing attack remained the subject of debate and conspiracy theories. The then opposition politician and later Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz (PiS) declared Gmyz's version to be a proven fact. TNT traces were even searched for in the exhumed corpses of the victims of the plane crash - and not found.

In 2011 and 2012 Gmyz wrote for the national conservative weekly magazine Uważam Rze , and in 2013 he switched to the weekly magazine Do Rzeczy . Since July 1, 2013, he has been a member of the supervisory board of the national conservative television broadcaster Televizja Republika .

Since September 2016 he has been working as a reporter for the Polish public television service Telewizja Polska (TVP) in Berlin. In an analysis by the weekly newspaper “ Die Zeit ” he was accused of systematically distorting facts in his reporting on Germany. In June 2019, the daily newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza Gmyz reported that he was an employee of the Polish domestic secret service CBA.

Private

As a member of the Evangelical Augsburg Congregation , he participated in the Church Synod of the 13th period as a delegate of the Trinity Church in Warsaw in 2012 .
