The Chacaltaya is a mountain in the Bolivian Cordillera Real with two peaks (mountain station of the former ski lift 5,395 meters, neighboring peaks 5,421 meters above sea level).
geography
The Chacaltaya lies between the peaks of the Huayna Potosí on one side and the Illimani on the other. These two mountains, numerous other peaks, in good weather Lake Titicaca , as well as La Paz and El Alto , about 30 km away, can be seen from its peaks.
observatory
At an altitude of 5,220 m, the Bolivian Universidad Mayor San Andrés (UMSA) operates an observatory in cooperation with other universities , which is known for its gamma-astronomical observations.
tourism
The mountain is passable up to a height of 5,200 meters, from La Paz organized excursions are offered. At the end of the road there is a hut belonging to the Austrian Alpine Club , which is now operated by the Club Andino Boliviano due to the lack of ski guests.
The Chacaltaya was considered the highest ski area in the world for many years, but the glacier has shrunk in recent years due to global warming and has completely disappeared since 2009. There is only a small, short slope and the rusted remains of a hand lift, but the ski area is no longer open. You can still climb the summit on foot without any problems.
