Chai Bar Jotvata is a twelve square kilometer park-like breeding and settlement center in southern Israel . It is located in the Arava Desert near Jotvata north of Eilat on Highway 90 .
The park mainly keeps threatened ungulates that were once native to the desert regions of Israel. The grazing animals inhabit a twelve square kilometer fenced area. Some of the descendants of the breeding groups are used for resettlement projects in the arid south of Israel. Thus, Arab oryx , African ostriches and wild ass kept under almost natural conditions in order to get used to a life of freedom. Half donkeys from Jotvata have now been settled in Israel in the wild, for example in the Machtesch Ramon crater .
Endangered species that never occurred in Israel and are not intended for reintroduction projects in the country are also being bred. These include the Somali wild ass , Mendes antelope and saber antelope . In a separate area, predators as well as reptiles and small animals of the desert are shown.
With the Chai Bar Karmel -Park, the zoo has a Mediterranean counterpart, in which animals from the less arid landscapes are bred.
