Chalamish ( Hebrew חַלָּמִישׁ, German  Kiesel ) sometimes also Newe Zuf ( Hebrew נְוֵה צוּף / נווה צוף) is an Israeli settlement in the West Bank. The community settlement belongs to the Mateh Benjamin regional administration .

history

Chalamish was officially founded on November 1st, 1977. On October 16, 1977, two groups of settlers, one religious, moved to Newe Zuf ( Hebrew נְוֵה צוּף) and a secular by the name of Newe Zela ( Hebrew נְוֵה צֶלַע), a total of 40 families, in the abandoned former British Tegart fort near the village of Nabi Salih. The settlement's original name, Newe Zuf , was rejected by the government's naming committee on the grounds that it was misleading because the biblical place Erez Zuf ( Hebrew אֶרֶץ צוּף) was elsewhere. The naming committee instead gave the new settlement the official name Chalamish, which comes from a Bible verse: God "made him suck oil from the pebble rock." (Deuteronomy 32:13). As this was rejected by some residents, both names are used.

On July 21, 2017, three members of a family in Chalamish were murdered by a Palestinian terrorist. The family had come together to celebrate the birth of a child. The assassin first murdered 46-year-old Chaya Salomon. Then he stabbed her 68-year-old mother Tova Salomon, who survived seriously injured. Then he killed the 36-year-old Elad Salomon. He stabbed Josef Salomon 15 times until the 70-year-old stopped moving. An off-duty soldier who was in the neighboring house wounded the attacker. The assassin was sentenced to three life sentences in February 2018.

Demographics

In 2017 the settlement had 1,314 inhabitants.
