At the same time, since October 1, 2007, he has been chairman of the Council for National Security, the junta that held state power after the coup of September 19, 2006 until the January 2008 elections. biography

Chalit was born on April 5, 1948. He is married to Phornthip Pukbhasuk (Thai: ผ ศ. ดร. พร ทิพย์ พุก ผาสุข ) who was a professor of literature at Chulalongkorn University until her retirement . They have two daughters.

Chalit graduated from the Thai Air Force Academy and then held several key positions in the Air Force. He became Commander in Chief of the Air Force in September 2005, succeeding Chalerm Chumchuensuk, who served only temporarily after General Kongsak Wantana resigned in July to become Minister of the Interior in the government of Thaksin Shinawatra . The king appointed Chalit and not General Raden Puengpak, who was initially proposed by the cabinet and against whom there were allegations of corruption. Allegedly the President of the Privy Council, Prem Tinsulanonda , is said to have prevented Raden's appointment.

At first, Chalit was reportedly reluctant to support the 2006 coup . Air force troops had not participated in the coup, and Army units marched in front of the Luftwaffe command to urge their commander to participate and to prevent the Luftwaffe from resisting the coup. In the end, however, he became vice chairman of the National Security Council under General Sonthi Boonyaratglin . On October 1, 2007, after Sonthi resigned, Chalit was appointed chairman of the National Security Council.

Chalit was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Thai Airways International from November 2006 to February 2008 . He resigned after the formation of the elected government of Samak Sundaravej and the dissolution of the National Security Council to allow the new government, which controls 51% of the shares in THAI, to appoint a new chairman. He was succeeded by Chaisawasd Kittipornpaiboon. In September 2008 he was replaced as Chief of the Air Force by General Itthaporn Subhawong.

In 2011 he was appointed to the Privy Council of King Bhumibol Adulyadej .
