Chamilo is an open-source learning platform (published under the GNU GPL ) , often abbreviated as LMS . Based on PHP and a supported database backend, the installation is platform-independent . Chamilo is currently available in 2 versions: Version 1.x is the consistent further development of Dokeos, while Version 4.x (LCMS) takes a completely new approach to e-learning. The project is supported by the Chamilo Association, which takes care of Chamilo's public relations on the one hand, and compliance with quality standards through certification from official service providers on the other.

history

Chamilo was officially on 18 January 2010, a large part of the then existing community of Dokeos forked . The roots go back to 2000, the start of Claroline , which was also forked in 2004 (to Dokeos ). The decision for a fork was the ever further drifting away from the philosophy of free software . More than 500 active developers and users attended the switch from Dokeos 1.8.6.1 to Chamilo 1.8.6.2.

Community

Meanwhile, more and more members of the Dokeos community have taken the plunge to Chamilo. Since Chamilo is still relatively young, a few installations have already been recorded, but a really large number (such as is recorded for WordPress or TYPO3 ) is not yet known. For Germany, the community is estimated at around 700 active people (administrators, course instructors and tutors), users well over 200,000 (as of May 2015).

Chamilo Association

Since June 2010 the Chamilo Association has been an officially registered non-profit making association under Belgian law. This was the consequent step taken by the community to prevent another drift. The right and future direction to / from Chamilo is therefore not in the hands of an individual, but is determined by a group of elected members. The founding members, who also sit on the Board of Directors (consisting of 7 members), came from the private e-learning sector and from public administrations.

Technical details

Chamilo is developed in PHP and preferably runs on LAMP or WAMP systems. On the user side, however, only a modern web browser is required (definition of this: version not older than three years). The Flash plug-in is required for some functions, but not absolutely necessary for essential use.

Modules

Thanks to its modular development, Chamilo can be expanded at any time. For example B. also a Powerpoint to learning path converter or the connection to video conference systems, such as B. BigBlueButton or OpenMeetings . However, these require sound administrative knowledge of the target system.

Worldwide distribution

  • in 2010 the focus was placed on dissemination in Asian countries; the translation into Chinese and Japanese resulted in a significant increase in active installations.
  • 2011 was dominated by the Middle East; However, the translation into Arabic did not result in as many active portals as there were in Asia.
  • Currently, the main focus is on targeted adaptation to the needs of universities and administrations; This enabled many new installations to be registered, especially in Europe and Latin America.
  • Chamilo is accompanied by professional service providers who, thanks to the certification by the Association, offer high quality service.
  • Chamilo is currently also in use in Spanish and Peruvian ministries.

Registered trademark

Chamilo is a registered trademark administered by the Chamilo Association .
