Champawat is a small town in the Indian state of Uttarakhand .

The city is the capital of the Champawat district . Champawat has Nagar Panchayat status . The city is divided into 4 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census, it had a total of 4801 inhabitants, of which 2543 were men and 2258 women. Hindus form the largest group of the city's population with a share of approx. 95%, followed by Muslims with approx. 5%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 95.91%.

Champawat used to be the capital of the Chand Dynasty rulers of Kumaon . The Baleshwar Temple was built by the Chand rulers in the 12th century.
