The Rüdesheim cable car is a gondola lift in Rüdesheim am Rhein in Hesse . It connects Rüdesheim with the Niederwald monument , which lies above Rüdesheim in the Niederwald .
history
At the end of the 19th century, tourism was booming on the Rhine and especially in Rüdesheim. One reason was the opening of the Niederwald monument. The 2.3 kilometer long Niederwaldbahn was built to transport tourists there . The cogwheel railway there overcame a height difference of 223 meters. It started operations on May 30, 1884, but was then shut down at the beginning of the Second World War in 1939. In an air raid on Rüdesheim on November 25, 1944, St. Catherine's Day , the railway was badly damaged and then not rebuilt. It was demolished in 1952. Tourists were taken to the memorial by bus during this time, and rebuilding the cog railway was considered unprofitable.
The idea of building a cheaper cable car came up as early as 1950. In the summer of 1953 business people founded the "Interest Group Rüdesheimer Seilbahn" together with the city of Rüdesheim and the Rheingau district in order to re-establish a connection to the Niederwald monument. The new gondola was inaugurated on Easter 1954. The costs amounted to 350,000 Deutschmarks. At that time, the gondolas hovered over the vines at a height of just seven meters, and the railway had to stop operating again and again to allow the winemaker's machines to move freely.
A supposed guest was Elvis Presley in his 1960 film GI Blues : As a GI in Germany, he arrives in Rüdesheim on a steamer and sings the song "Pocketful of Rainbows" with his film partner Juliet Prowse on a trip to the Niederwald in gondola number 76 . Although the recordings were only a photomontage and Presley never took the cable car, the place has cult status with its fans.
In 2004, its 50th anniversary year, Deutsche Bahn recorded its 30 millionth passenger.
In 2005 the track was completely renovated. Up to 85 larger semi-closed gondolas in a retro look, which are custom-made by a company in Rüdesheim, now float at a height of 15 meters . A gondola can transport two adults with two children, as well as wheelchairs, bicycles, strollers or dogs. A wedding gondola with the number 100 can be ordered on request.
Starting in winter 2020, the valley station, where the cable car can previously only be reached via several steps in the forecourt and two floors with around 40 steps inside the building, is to be redesigned to be barrier-free (as of July 2020).
