Champhai is a city in the Indian state of Mizoram . It is the third largest city in Mizoram by population.
The city is the capital of the Champhai district . Champhai has the status of a town . The city is divided into 15 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census, it had 32,734 inhabitants, 16,265 of whom were men and 16,469 women. Christians make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 97%. Hindus and Muslims form minorities of around 1% each. The literacy rate in 2011 was 96.5%, well above the national average. 98.1% of the population belong to the Scheduled Tribes .
The city lies on the border between India and Myanmar and is therefore at a strategically important point. Because of this, it is the main trade corridor between the two countries in the region.
