The Champions Cup 2020 ( Russian Кубок Чемпионов 2020 Kubok Tschempionow 2020 ) was a billiards tournament that took place from March 19 to July 9, 2020 in the Krylatskoje Sports Palace in the Russian capital Moscow . The game was Free Pyramid , a discipline of Russian billiards .

Originally the tournament was supposed to take place from March 19th to April 30th. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , it was interrupted for an initially indefinite period of time after two games on March 26 and continued on June 9. Due to the pandemic, the game was played without spectators from the start.

The winner was the Russian Iossif Abramow , who defeated the Kyrgyz Asis Madaminow 7-0 in the final. Third place went to Dmytro Biloserow and Diana Mironowa .

The defending champion was the Ukrainian Oleksandr Palamar , who did not take part this year. None of the eight participants had taken part in any of the previous editions of the Champions Cup.

With record world champion Diana Mironowa and the reigning World Cup winner Elina Nagula , women took part in the tournament for the first time.

After only four players had been invited last year, the field was increased to eight players. The eight participants initially competed against each other in a double knockout system . From the semi-finals onwards, the game was played in the knockout system .

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the tournament was held without spectators. Due to quarantine regulations in his hometown of Rostov-on-Don , the two-time world champion Iossif Abramov had to cancel his participation first.

On the morning of the second meeting ( Valeryj Tschyschou - Diana Mironowa ), the venue, the Sports Palace in Moscow's Krylatskoje district , was closed at short notice due to Corona. The game was therefore moved to the Legend Billiard Club , Mironova's homeland club. After the match, the tournament was suspended indefinitely.

On June 4th the world association IPC announced that the tournament would continue on June 9th. The reigning world champion Semyon Saizew , who was supposed to play the first match after the restart, had to cancel his participation due to the quarantine regulations in Chelyabinsk . He was replaced by Iossif Abramov, who has since returned to Moscow.

final

In the final, the Kyrgyz Asis Madaminow met the Russian Iossif Abramow . While the 19-year-old Russian had already become world champion twice and once vice world champion, one of the greatest successes of the eight-year-old Kyrgyz, in addition to two bronze medals in the World Cup, was reaching the final of the Savvidi Cup last year.

The game was one-sided. In the first five games Madaminow scored a total of only three points. Only the sixth game turned out to be more balanced. But Abramov also won this rack, this time with 8: 4 points. In the following game Abramov prevailed 8-0, which he won the final 7-0 and became the first Russian to win the Champions Cup.
