Chance to the power of 2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chance hoch 2 is a scholarship program for educational climbers that was included in the 2012 “ National Action Plan for Integration ” by Chancellor Angela Merkel . Chance hoch 2 is a program of the Vice Rector for Diversity Management and the Academic Advisory Center for Studies and Work (ABZ) at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and is financed by the Mercator Foundation and the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Young people from non-academic families with and without a migrant background are funded for three years from school to the end of the first year of study. The aim of the program is to increase the educational opportunities for young people who are seen as disadvantaged and thus to improve educational equity and equal opportunities in Germany.

background

As the PISA and IGLU studies showed, children from non-academic families take up a degree significantly less often than children from upper social classes. This is also confirmed by the DSW social survey by the German Student Union. In 2009, 23% of young people from low-income households came to higher education, with 77% of young people from the upper income group studying. The migration background also plays an important role in terms of educational success.

If three quarters of 100 children from university graduates go to university, from 100 children whose parents are not academics, but only a quarter, then we cannot explain this with a lack of intelligence. On the way to graduation, a lot of potential remains untapped because there is simply a lack of support. Here, 'Chance hoch Zwei' provides exemplary support with advice, encouragement and the transfer of university experience " - said the Minister of Science Svenja Schulze at the award ceremony for the program" Chance hoch 2 "as a" Place of Progress NRW 2016 ".

program

"Chance hoch 2" started in 2010 and accepts 25 students every year. Initially, the program is limited to 2022. The primary goal is to support talented, committed and motivated young people from socially disadvantaged families to improve their educational opportunities and to give them the opportunity to be the first to study in their families. The funding program is divided into two phases:

1st phase: student

Students are admitted to the program from Grade 11 (G8) or Grade 12 (G9 and GS). "Chance hoch 2" includes both non-material and financial support. During the student phase, "Chance hoch 2" offers the participants seminars and workshops with the following focuses:

  • Language and learning skills (as preparation for the Abitur)
  • Study choice orientation
  • Professional competence (e.g. trial studies, student studies)

There is also a mentoring project as part of the program . The young people are divided into small groups (3-5 people) and each group is assigned a mentor. The mentors can be students of the “Chance hoch 2” program as well as external students. The mentors support their mentees on their educational advancement by e.g. B. show them the university or take part in cultural leisure activities such as B. Visiting theaters, concerts and museums. The aim of mentoring is to introduce students to the university, to convey education as a value to them and, above all, to accompany and support them on their path of advancement. It is not uncommon for former mentees to become mentors themselves in the second phase of the program and to accompany the mentees from the younger age groups. This guarantees better support, as the mentors go through the same path as educational climbers and are very familiar with this role.

Furthermore, the participants of the program have the opportunity to take part in “remedial classes” at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Here, pupils with a migrant background at secondary level I and II receive tutoring in various subjects in groups of around 2 - 5 pupils, which are as homogeneous as possible. In addition, the students in the program receive a monthly educational allowance of € 50, which is used for education (laptops, books and high school aids, stationery, etc.).

2nd phase: students

Once the participants have passed their Abitur and started studying, “Chance hoch 2” continues to offer supportive seminars and workshops such as B. "Communication at the University", "Semester abroad", "Scientific writing", "Individual career planning", "Application training", etc. In addition, the students receive an "Opportunities booklet" with other current seminars and training courses from the cooperation partners at the UDE, such as . B. Events from the "Oral Communication Forum", crash courses in the "Writing Workshop", offers from the "Career Service", etc. Furthermore, individual coaching and permanent personal advice and support are available to the participants in the program. In addition, participants in the program receive a scholarship of € 300 in their first year of study.

  • On April 11, 2016, “Chance hoch 2” was awarded the “Place of Progress NRW 2016” prize by the Science Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Svenja Schulze.
