Chapel of the Snows (2008)

The Chapel of the Snows ( English , "Chapel in the snow") is a non-denominational Christian chapel in the United States operated McMurdo Research Station on the Antarctic Ross Island . After a building made entirely of ice in the Argentine Belgrano II station, it is the southernmost sacred building on earth. Regular church services are offered. The Protestant clergy are provided by the United States Air National Guard . The Archdiocese of Wellington and later the Diocese of Christchurch in New Zealand sent Catholic priests from 1958 to 2015 , but stopped doing so due to the reduced number of believers.

The English Chapel of the Snows is also used for events and meetings of other faith communities or secular (non-religious) groups.

The current chapel was consecrated in 1989 after the building that had been in use up until then fell victim to a fire in August 1978.
