Charilaos Vasilakos
Charilaos Vasilakos ( Greek Χαρίλαος Βασιλάκος , * 1877 in Tripoli ; † December 1, 1969 in Athens ) was a Greek athlete .
Vasilakos took part in the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 . At the previous Panhellenic Games in March you had to choose Greek starters for the Olympic Games in the same year. Vasilakos, already known as a good long-distance runner at that time, won the first marathon in history at these Panhellenic Games in a time of 3:18 hours.
At the Summer Games in 1896 Vasilakos was one of the 17 starters in the field of the marathon. He finished second behind Spyridon Louis with a time of 3:06 hours. Only nine competitors crossed the finish line.
At the Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens in 1906 , he was fifth in walking over 1500 m.
After his career as a sportsman, Vasilakos became a customs officer in Athens, where he also died in 1969.
