Charles-Augustin de Ferriol d'Argental (* December 20, 1700 ; † January 5, 1788 ; family pseudonym Gossaut ) was a French administrator and ambassador.

Life

Charles-Augustin de Ferriol d'Argental was the son of Augustin-Antoine de Ferriol (1653-1737), the Count of Argental, president ( président à mortier ) of the court of Metz , whose brother Charles de Ferriol d'Argental was the French ambassador of Was Constantinople . His mother was Marie-Angélique Guérin de Tencin (1674-1736), the sister of Cardinal Pierre Guérin de Tencin and the Marquise of Tencin .

In 1721, Charles-Augustin de Ferriol d'Argental became a councilor (conseiller) at the highest court in France, the so-called Parlement in Paris. In 1737 he married Jeanne-Gâce Bosc du Bouchet. In 1738 he refused the offer to become administrator of the colony of Saint-Domingue , later he took over the representation of the Duchy of Parma , which he held from 1759 to 1788. After the death of his aunt, La Grolée, in 1760, he became baron of the Île de Ré .

He is known for his friendship with Voltaire , who wrote numerous letters to Argental and his wife, whom he called "my divine angels". Argental and his wife worked tirelessly for Voltaire, distributed Voltaire's writings and protected him from persecution by his opponents through their relationships. The correspondence between Argental and Voltaire stretched over 60 years, with a total of around 1200 letters.
