Pierre Guérin, Cardinal de Tencin

Pierre Guérin de Tencin (born August 22, 1680 in Grenoble , † March 2, 1758 in Lyon ) was a French cardinal of the Catholic Church . He was also Archbishop of Embrun (1724–1740) and of Lyon (1740–1758).

Live and act

His father was Antoine Guérin de Tencin (1641-1705) and his mother was Louise de Buffévent, both married since September 22, 1673 in Grenoble. One of his sisters was Claudine Guérin de Tencin , a salonnière in Paris and the birth mother of the mathematician and encyclopaedist Jean Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert .

After studying with the Oratorians in his hometown, he enrolled at the Sorbonne , where he received his prior in 1702 and his doctorate in 1705. He became vicar general of the diocese of Sens and in 1721 accompanied Cardinal de Rohan to Rome , where he took part in the conclave to support Cardinal Conti . He stayed in Rome to support the abbot of Trois-Fontaines Monastery until Benedict XIII. appointed him on June 26, 1724 as Archbishop of Embrun .

Pope Clement XII. elevated Guérin de Tencin to cardinal on February 23, 1739, his titular church was St. Nereus and Achilles . As French ambassador he stayed in Rome until 1742, where he was appointed Archbishop of Lyon on November 19, 1740. The French King Louis XV. appointed him Minister of State without portfolio in September 1742.

Cardinal Guérin de Tencin persecuted the Jansenists condemned as heretics with great severity and deposed Bishop Jean Soanen de Senez at a provincial synod in Embrun, despite his age of 80, because he had violated the bull Unigenitus Dei filius .

After the death of the elderly cardinal and ruling minister André-Hercule de Fleury , who had promoted him very much, in January 1743, Cardinal de Tencin lost its influence. In 1749 his sister Claudine Guérin de Tencin died, who had also contributed a lot to his rise on the career ladder. Finally, in 1752, he retired to his diocese of Lyon.
