On March 15, 1748 he was made Bishop of Autun and consecrated on March 18, 1748 by François de Fitz-James , Bishop of Soissons . In the same year, 1748, de Malvin de Montazet became head of the Abbey of Monthiers-en-Argonne . From 1756 he was a member of the Académie française , but did not write any significant literary work. De Malvin de Montazet was one of the brilliant minds of his time and was a good speaker. Over the years he had many arguments with the Archbishop of Paris, Christophe de Beaumont , on spiritual matters . The last years of de Malvin de Montazet's life were overshadowed by problems and several scandals. Although he was not one of the appellants and avoided any formal opposition to the papal bull Unigenitus Dei filius of 1713, he was regarded as their avowed opponent. For the seminary of his diocese, de Malvin de Montazet had the oratorian Joseph Valla publish six volumes of the Institutiones Theologicae . These were known as Theologie de Lyon and spread throughout Italy by the Bishop of Pistoia and Prato , Scipione de 'Ricci , until they were finally placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1792 .
