Charles Édouard Delort
Charles Édouard Delort (born February 4, 1841 in Nîmes , † March 6, 1895 in Saint-Eugène ( Algeria )) was a French painter.
Following his father's request, Charles Édouard Delort entered the Naval Academy as a student in 1853. However, he quickly gave up studying to pursue an artistic career. He moved to Paris in 1859, where Jean-Léon Gérôme , a painter friend of his family, supported his acceptance into Charles Gleyre's studio .
In 1862 he accompanied Jean-Léon Geróme on his trip to Egypt. After returning to Paris, he took part in the competition for the Prix de Rome without success .
Delort moved to La Nicotière in Bourron-Marlotte , where he invited his friend Armand Charnay (1844-1915), who settled in the village in 1871.
He exhibited for the first time in the Salon de Paris in 1864 and received a second class medal there in 1882. In 1887 he provided artwork for the American Scribner's Magazine. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1888.
He died in Bologhine (Saint-Eugène) near Algiers in his brother's house.
