Adolf Friedrich Zürcher

Adolf Friedrich Zürcher (born December 28, 1820 in Arbon ; † January 5, 1888 in Herisau ) was a Swiss politician , doctor and judge . From 1857 to 1872 he was a member of the National Council, from 1857 to 1867 and 1871/72 he was a member of the cantonal government of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

His parents were the dyer and manufacturer Johann Ulrich Zürcher and Maria Heidegger. Born in Teufen from Zurich, he graduated from high school in St. Gallen from 1835 , and from 1838 studied medicine at the universities of Zurich , Heidelberg and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1842 he opened a doctor's practice in Herisau, which he gave up six years later to devote himself to politics. Also in 1848 he married Sophie Schläpfer, the daughter of the former Landammann Johann Jakob Schläpfer . He took part in the Sonderbund War as a battalion doctor.

Zürchers political career in 1848 began with the election to the local council of Herisau , which he belonged to. 1852 He was then a member of the Small Council behind the Sitter until 1857. In 1857 he was elected to the professional ethics committee, the cantonal government of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. His last position was in 1871/72 as Landammann. In parallel to this, Zürcher held other offices at the cantonal level. He was a member of the marriage court from 1859 to 1867 (1866/67 as president). He contributed his medical knowledge from 1847 to 1867 as president of the cantonal sanitary commission, as well as president of the examination authority of the Swiss medical concordat. In addition, from 1847 to 1867 he was President of the Ausserrhoder State School Commission and from 1853 to 1887 President of the Wiesen Rescue Center in Herisau.

In the parliamentary elections in 1857 , Zürcher was elected to the National Council for the first time . He was re-elected five times in a row, most recently in the parliamentary elections in 1872 . As a moderate liberal, he was more inclined to the conservatives. From 1872 to 1880 he presided over the Ausserrhoder Higher Court . As a member of the cantonal audit council from 1875 to 1881, he played a key role in the revision of the Ausserrhoder civil and criminal procedure codes.
