Charles Burklin

Charles Burklin (born September 30, 1881 in Geneva , † July 20, 1957 on a cruise to the North Cape , resident in Geneva) was a Swiss politician ( SP ).

biography

Burklin graduated from the modern language high school and later graduated from the cantonal horticultural school. He then worked as a gardener abroad for four years. He returned to Switzerland in 1902 and joined the postal service. In 1925 he became the head of service at Kreispostdirektion I (Geneva) and from 1932 was chief financial officer.

From 1922 he was on the municipal council of Le Petit-Saconnex and was also municipal councilor of the city of Geneva from 1930 until his death . From 1919 to 1933 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Geneva and from 1922 to 1928 and from 1931 to 1933 a Council of States . In 1922 he was the only social democratic councilor in Switzerland.

As a very active trade unionist , he founded the Ligue du personnel à traitement fixe (Association of Fixed Salaries) in 1918 and presided over it for two years. He also founded the Geneva housing cooperative . To protest against the Lex Häberlin , he organized various demonstrations in 1922 . Burklin refused to run for the Council of State after World War II . He joined the Communist Party of Labor and took a seat on the Grand Council again from 1948 to 1954.
