Charles Courant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles Courant (* 14. April 1896 , † 26. June 1982 in Montreux ) was a Swiss wrestler and oscillators . He won as a freestyle wrestler at the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 and in Paris in 1924 a silver medal and a bronze medal , respectively, in the light heavyweight division .

Career

Charles Courant came from French-speaking western Switzerland. Like almost all Swiss freestyle wrestlers of those years, he came from the wrestling camp. However, nothing is known about his success in wrestling.

As a freestyle wrestler, Charles Courant competed in the light heavyweight division at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp . There he defeated Jan van Rensburg, South Africa , Henri Snoeck, Belgium and John Roland Redman from the United States. In the final battle he was defeated by Anders Larsson from Sweden and won the silver medal.

Charles Courant also competed in the same style and weight class at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris . He first defeated Charles Strack from the United States and Poul Hansen from Denmark in Paris . Then he met Rudolf Svensson from Sweden . The official memoir of the International Olympic Committee about the 1924 Olympic Games under the patronage of the Swiss Olympic Committee, published in 1925 by Julius Wagner Verlag, Zurich / Munich, on page 53, says about this fight: In this class the fight seemed to be a duel between Spellmann (United States) and Courant (Switzerland). However, the Swiss put his good chances in the demi-final by resigning after the fifth minute of the fight against Svensson after the Swede had made an illegal grip without being warned by the referees.

So Charles Courant seems to have been a man of principle. He had no other opportunities to take part in international championships, because in the amateur camp, European championships were only held in free style from 1929 and world championships only from 1951. After his sports career, he was also a founding member of the Vaud gymnastics and wrestling association and was also a functionary in the Swiss wrestling association for many years.
