Wells studied mathematics at Oberlin College with a bachelor's degree in 1962 and received his doctorate in 1965 under Leonard Carlitz (permutation polynomials over finite fields). In 1965 he became an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University , where he became an associate professor and a professor in 1980.

He dealt with algebra (finite bodies, group theory) and category theory, especially topos theory, about which he wrote a standard work with Michael Barr .

In 1975/76 and 1983 he was a visiting scientist at the ETH Zurich and in 1990 at Oxford (Computing Lab).
