biography

Charles Browne Hardwicke was born in England as the eldest child of Charles and Frances (née Browne) Hardwicke. In 1803, at the age of 15, Hardwicke went to sea for the first time. At the age of 19 he was a soldier in the Royal Navy and fought for England in the Napoleonic War . In 1813, at the age of 25, he left the Royal Navy and was hired as a third officer on a prison ship to Sydney . After his arrival he was allowed to stay in Australia. He also received 200 acres of farmland in the Norfolk Plainsnear Launceston. As the island's population grew rapidly, he was commissioned with his brother Frederick and 6 other men to explore the north coast of Tasmania from Port Dalrymple to West Point . The hard journey lasted five months. He claimed that the land he was exploring was "quite impenetrable and completely uninhabitable". This land is now one of the most fertile farmlands in Tasmania.
