Charles Philip Ingalls (born January 10, 1836 in Cuba , New York , † June 8, 1902 in De Smet , South Dakota ) was the father of Laura Ingalls Wilder . He is known as the model for the character of the same name from the series Our Little Farm , which is based on his daughter's books very freely and with the introduction of many fictional events and people.

Life

Ingalls was born as the second of nine children of Landsford Whiting Ingalls (1812-1896) and Laura Louise Colby Ingalls (1810-1883). When he was twelve, the family moved to Illinois , and from there to Wisconsin . There he married Caroline Quiner on February 1, 1860. They moved west together, and numerous other moves followed. He pursued his wanderlust and had an aversion to big cities and the job opportunities there. The family moved from Wisconsin to Kansas , then back to Wisconsin, from there to Minnesota, from there to Iowa and finally in 1879 to the Dakota Territory , where he worked as a justice of the peace among other activities .

Ingalls died at home at the age of 66 after several weeks of illness. He was buried in De Smet Cemetery .

The Ingalls had five children: Mary , Laura , Carrie, Charles Frederick (died in the first year of life) and Grace. The family became known through the book series of his daughter Laura Our Little Farm (Original title: Little House on the Prairie ). In the television series, Charles Ingalls was portrayed by Michael Landon .
